Reds vs. Phillies MLB Picks: Will Philly Keep Dominating Cincinnati?

Last updated: September 9, 2022 3:07 PM EDT • 4 min read X Social Google News Link

The Cincinnati Reds are still seeking their first win against the Philadelphia Phillies in their three-game road series. Here are our Reds-Phillies picks.
The Phillies have been dominating the Reds. Philadelphia is now 5-1 versus Cincinnati in 2022, including two wins against the Reds to open the current series at home. The Reds are 4-11 over their last 15 games, with five of those losses coming against the Phillies.
Philadelphia has won three of its last four games. The club has also been sizzling since the All-Star break while going 20-12, with five of those defeats coming at the hands of the division-leading New York Mets.
Here are my Red-Phillies picks and predictions for Thursday night’s game (odds via FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, and DraftKings Sportsbook; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5 scale).

Reds vs. Phillies Odds Analysis
The Phillies are the heavy moneyline favorites, ranging from -300 at DraftKings and BetMGM to -335 at Fanduel.
All major sportsbooks have set the total at 8.5.
Reds vs. Phillies Projected Pitchers
Justin Dunn (1-1, 6.08 ERA, 1.73 WHIP) vs. Aaron Nola (8-10, 3.25 ERA, 0.96 WHIP)
There’s a reason the Phillies are a heavyweight favorite. Justin Dunn has logged just three starts in 2022 after the Reds called him up on Aug. 8.
Dunn's best outing came during his debut with the Reds, and it wasn’t exactly pretty. He pitched 4 2/3 innings versus the Mets while allowing five hits and three earned runs, including a home run. The righty also hit a batter and gave up two walks, all leading to a 5.79 ERA.
He's allowed at least one home run in each of his three starts, which is a concern against the Phillies' lineup. Home runs and walks are glaring issues for Dunn, and hitters are averaging .288 against him. The Reds' bullpen is among the league's worst, so the team needs its starters to go deep.
Meanwhile, the Phillies will trot out their ace Aaron Nola. He's been enjoying his best season since 2018. Nola may be coming off a tough start against the Mets after coughing up five runs on eight hits, but he still struck out nine batters across five innings.
The right-hander is producing a strikeout percentage of 28.2%, and he's in the top 2% of the league in walk rate at 3.6%. He's registered a 2.91 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 110 strikeouts over his last 15 starts.
Reds vs. Phillies Picks

Reds vs. Phillies ML Pick
Phillies (-300) ★★★★
The Phillies' offense is known for its lethal power hitters, and it can easily pounce on Dunn and the Reds’ bullpen.
The Phillies boast the league's 10th-best batting average at .251. They average 4.63 runs per game, and the club has hit the sixth-most home runs in MLB (160).
Home runs are also an issue for the Reds’ bullpen, which owns a league-worst ERA at 4.88. The unit has allowed 63 home runs and MLB's third-most walks at 208. Not much is lining up in the Reds’ favor.
The Reds' offense also isn't on the same level as the Phillies' lineup. The team's batting average is .241 and Cincinnati averages 8.95 strikeouts per game, which certainly doesn't position the Reds well against Nola and his strikeout rate.
Ride with the heavy moneyline favorite and take the Phillies.
Reds vs. Phillies O/U Pick
Under 8.5 (-115) ★★★
Despite the potential for a hitting frenzy from the Phillies, take the Under with Nola on the mound.
While the Reds' offense is coming off two quality games after producing 11 runs, the club's strikeout rate is high. Nola’s low fastball could make it a very quiet night for Cincinnati.
Though the Phillies' lineup is powerful, it's tough to envision three straight high-scoring nights between the two teams after the final scores in the last two games were 7-6 and 7-5.
Reds vs. Phillies Prop Pick
Schwarber to hit a home run (+285) ★★
Kyle Schwarber leads the Phillies in RBIs with 71 and home runs with 34. The Phillies' power starts with him.
Schwarber has been in a bit of a slump, and he's a streaky hitter. He hasn’t hit a home run since Aug. 5 and currently owns a .212 batting average. But the slugger is still well-positioned against the homer-prone Dunn.
