🏁 NASCAR predictions, expert picks & best bets at Iowa

Iowa Speedway, which made its first appearance on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule last year, measures seven-eighths of a mile. Its asphalt surface and 12-to-14 degree banking in the corners make it compare favorably to other short, mostly flat ovals, like Richmond and Phoenix.

Team Penske has been dominant at these venues in recent years. The team didn’t look quite as sharp at Phoenix this year, however, with Christopher Bell dominating in average green-flag speed. Still, three of the four Penske-affiliate drivers ranked top six in the metric - just without results to show for it.

Goodyear is bringing a new tire to Iowa this year. The three drivers who tested it in June were Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe, which gives them and their teams a bit of a leg up. As a result, I predict Ryan Blaney will win the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa.

It would be nice to get a better than $55 profit on a $10 bet for Blaney to win this race, but I’ll take it with most of the best sports betting sites listing him at +450 or +500. Blaney won this race last year after leading 201 of 350 laps, posting a near-perfect driver rating while leading the event in average green-flag speed.

The lack of results at Phoenix is a bit of a red flag, but Team Penske locks in at short, flat ovals, and that’s helped the team win the last three Cup Series championships. Blaney still looked good enough at Phoenix before his engine gave out for me to add this bet to the card.

Add in the wrinkle that Richard Childress Racing, not Hendrick Motorsports, participated in the tire test in June, and you’ve got a meaningful information advantage for this Penske group. I’m way more interested in buying Blaney than the similarly priced Hamlin, Bell, or Larson.

💎 Best value bet to win Iowa Corn 350: Brad Keselowski (+3500) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

📊 Best odds: +3500 via BetMGM ($10 to win $350)

I struggled to identify a value bet on the board with so many favorites at such short odds. William Byron (+1000 at FanDuel) isn’t a bad option. So is Joey Logano (+1600 at FanDuel). The problem is that one of the two winningest Xfinity Series drivers at this track is sitting at +3500 - and he is in a must-win situation for the playoffs.

Keselowski won here in Xfinity three times. He won the inaugural event in 2009 after leading 121 of 250 laps. He won again in 2013 and 2014. Over seven starts, Keselowski recorded an absurd average finishing position of third with a worst result of eighth.

The problem is that Keselowski didn’t have pace at Phoenix. That said, his teammates did: Ryan Preece was seventh by average green-flag speed while Chris Buescher was 11th. He should have just enough pace to get one of his desperation, hail-mary strategy calls to work - he and crew chief Jeremy Bullins understand the assignment, and this is too good a price for the duo.

🎯 Best long shot to win Iowa Corn 350: Austin Cindric (+6500) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

📊 Best odds: +6500 via ESPN BET ($10 to win $650)

Both Cindric and Ryan Preece (+5000 at FanDuel) could fit in this section, but we’re going with Cindric because of his involvement in the tire test here in June - and the slightly better price, which would yield a $650 profit on a $10 bet.

Cindric has been in contention for several wins this year, but untimely cautions and mechanical issues have deprived him of chances to seal the deal. Like Keselowski, Cindric lacked pace at Phoenix, but also like Keselowski, his teammates brought it.

Cindric may be perceived as best suited for superspeedway or road course racing, but let’s not forget his surprise win at Gateway last season. Gateway, like Iowa, is a relatively short, flat oval.

With Cindric’s teammates all sporting far shorter odds, we simply have to get exposure to the resident Team Penske long shot. We tried this strategy last week at Indianapolis, and, while it didn’t work out, Cindric led 40 laps early before a tire issue took him out of the lead. His luck will have to turn around at some point, right?

💰 Best NASCAR prop bets & picks at Iowa

We’re turning to another Ford driver for our top Iowa Corn 350 prop bet, but he’s one with a lot more on the line this Sunday than most other drivers. We’ll also discuss a quadruple-digit option to score a top 10.

🔥 Best prop bet for Iowa Corn 350: Chris Buescher Top 10 (+130) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

📊 Best odds: +130 via ESPN BET ($10 to win $13)
🔢 Implied probability: 43.48%

With Wallace’s win last week, Buescher is now on the razor’s edge of the playoff cut line. That’s a problem because his results have been slipping. Buescher looked set for a top 10 at Indianapolis before some chaos on a late-race restart sent him back to 14th.

One underdiscussed stat regarding Buescher is his success in qualifying. Buescher leads the Cup Series in average starting position (10.4), which will be important at Iowa because it’s hard to pass at short tracks in the NextGen car.

Buescher is the model of consistency. With 11 top 10s in 22 starts, getting him at better than even odds is usually a profitable proposition.

🚀 Best long-shot prop bet for Iowa Corn 350: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. top-10 finish (+1100) ⭐⭐⭐

📊 Best odds: +1100 via FanDuel ($10 to win $110)
🔢 Implied probability: 8.33%

We’re back to placing quadruple-digit top-10 bets. This time, we’re getting the other winningest Xfinity Series driver at Iowa Speedway for a top 10 at +1100 on FanDuel, which feels like stealing. Stenhouse drove up to fifth from 35th here last year in a very impressive performance for the No. 47 team.

Stenhouse’s Xfinity Series resume here isn’t quite as impressive as Keselowski’s, but it’s still impressive. He won here twice in 2011 and again in 2012. His last win saw him lead 209 of 250 laps en route to a perfect driver rating.

With a $10 bet returning a $110 profit, Stenhouse is well worth targeting at this price.

📈 NASCAR trends & Iowa Speedway history

Here are a few Iowa Corn 350 trends to consider before betting on Sunday's race at Iowa Speedway.

🏎️ Qualifying matters! We’ve only seen the NextGen cars here once, but it should come as no surprise that a driver starting on the front row won the race. In fact, 281 of the 350 laps were led by a driver who started in the first two rows. The first four finishers all started in the first five rows.

🏎️ Target Team Penske. While we have a sample size of one Iowa race, we have a larger sample of flat, short tracks, and Team Penske has excelled at these venues in the NextGen Era. Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano have combined to win six of the races across Iowa, Martinsville, Richmond, and Phoenix.

💡 How to bet on NASCAR at Iowa

When handicapping short, flat ovals - especially in the NextGen Era - there are a few key NASCAR betting strategy tips to consider:

  • Watch qualifying. Starting position matters at short tracks because it can be quite difficult to pass. Blaney and Larson combined to lead over 80% of last year’s race at Iowa after starting P2 and P1, respectively.
  • Don’t expect an upset. The big three - Hendrick, Penske, and Joe Gibbs Racing - have combined to win 16 of the 21 races at Iowa, Martinsville, Richmond, and Phoenix. Bet on their drivers with long odds but generally avoid the field.
