Harper gets to take his hacks against Kyle Freeland to start the evening tonight, the Colorado Rockies hurler who's become rather charitable with his home runs allowed. He's posted an HR/9 of 1.7 in each of the past two seasons (league average last year was 1.3), and the southpaw is only one campaign removed from sitting fourth-worst in the NL in dingers allowed at 29.

Freeland gives up missiles regularly, leading to an average exit velocity of 90.3 that sat in only the 12th percentile of MLB last season, according to Baseball Savant.

It all sets up well for Harper, who's off to a sizzling start at the plate with at least one hit in every game so far, including his Opening Day long ball. More critically, Harper has always handled lefties well, especially last year when he posted a .907 OPS against them.

Merrill isn't wasting any time after finishing second in NL Rookie of the Year voting last season. He's reached base nine times over his first six games of the new campaign, including a 3-for-4 outing during the second contest of the season, and a home run last night.

That all comes after he slashed .292/.326/.500 as a rookie. Now he gets the ideal opportunity to beef up his 2025 numbers further while facing Ben Lively, the Cleveland Guardians starter with a mediocre fastball that opponents regularly pummelled last year while slugging .555 against his four-seamer.

⚾ Ketel Marte (Diamondbacks) to hit a home run⭐⭐⭐

Marte is also off to a productive start, recording a hit in all but one game so far, including two multi-hit contests and two doubles. The second baseman brings plenty of pop, too, after setting a career-high with 36 homers last year. He hasn't gone deep this season, but tonight, he has an ideal opportunity to change that.

Carlos Rodon is often the cure for what ails a slugger who needs to clear the fences. He was frequently pulverized in 2024 while giving up 31 homers, tied for the second-most in MLB. He put together a quality debut to the new season against the Milwaukee Brewers. However, that came after a wayward spring when he showed significant command issues with six walks over only 10 innings.

The switch-hitting Marte posted a boiling-hot 1.080 OPS against lefties last year, too.

Sample sizes are always minuscule less than a week into a new season, but it's still not a fun time as a hitter to see a whole lot of zeroes next to your name. That's what greets Devers in a few areas amid his mini-slump to begin the year, as he's gone hitless over 23 plate appearances.

But he's simply too powerful to stay down much longer, and Zach Eflin should present a great chance to bust loose.

The Orioles' newly acquired starter is off to a good start after a respectable 3.59 ERA last year. But he succeeds while relying almost exclusively on breaking pitches and deception, all while throwing a fastball just 8.4% of the time last year. Devers tattooed that sort of arsenal in 2024 while slugging .540 against breaking balls and hitting 11 of his 28 home runs, according to Baseball Savant.
