MLB Torpedo Bat Odds: Which Hitters are Using Special Bat Today & How to Bet on Them

If you've watched, heard, or read anything about baseball in the last week, you're surely familiar with the "torpedo bat" that is all the rage in MLB this season.
The New York Yankees started the trend on Opening Day, and after their record-setting start at the plate, some of MLB's top stars have adopted the bowling pin-style bat ... and the results are hard to ignore.
So, naturally, DraftKings is offering odds on which players using the torpedo bat today will light it up at the dish, so we're breaking down everything you need to know about MLB's hottest trend and how to profit off it ahead of today's games.

π What is the torpedo bat?
In short, the "torpedo bat" is a (legal) baseball bat that was engineered by a former MIT physics professor to shift the barrel of the bat - the heaviest part of the bat that creates the most power upon contact - closer to the batter's hand where they often make contact.
The result, in theory, is an increase in power on a higher percentage of a player's hits. Sounds simple enough, right? The results have been plain to see, too, with the Yankees' lineup setting records and other top stars finding their groove with the new bat, too.

π₯ Best MLB player prop bets using torpedo bat
Here are three of my favorite MLB bets today featuring players using the torpedo bats. You can also check out our MLB player prop odds tool for the latest MLB odds at the best legal sportsbooks in your region.
π Yankees to hit a home run (-195)
π Opponent: Arizona Diamondbacks
π First pitch: 7:05 PM ET
The Bronx Bombers were the ones who started this fervor last week when they hit two runs on Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers using their newly engineered bats.
They followed that up with an absurd nine home runs - including three on the first three pitches of the game - in a 20-9 win on Saturday and another four bombs in a 12-3 win on Sunday. In total, the Yankees lead the majors with 15 home runs despite playing fewer games (three) than any other MLB club.
So how could you not be compelled to bet on at least one home run tonight, even with Corbin Burnes on the mound for the Arizona Diamondbacks? These odds imply a 66.10% chance that the Yankees hit one after clubbing 15 in three games. I like our chances there.
π Dansby Swanson Over 1.5 total bases (+150)
π Opponent: Athletics
π First pitch: 10:05 PM ET
This bet isn't as sexy as the other two props on this list, but it might be the best value on the board based on how well Swanson has been swinging the bat this year.
Whether the result of offseason adjustments or something as simple as the torpedo bat, the Chicago Cubs shortstop is off to one of the better starts of his career - especially in the power department. He's already hit two home runs in seven games with five RBIs and four extra-base hits, and his xSLG (.591) and xwOBA (.379) are on pace for career highs.
He only needs one extra-base knock to cash this bet today against A's starter Luis Severino, who was impressive in his debut (6 IP, 0 ER) but still struggled with his command (four walks) and got crushed when batters made contact. Severino has long struggled to keep the ball in the yard, which has me intrigued by this plus-money bet.
π Elly De La Cruz to hit a HR (+475)
π Opponent: Texas Rangers
π‘ First pitch: 6:40 PM ET
As if one of baseball's brightest stars needed any more help, De La Cruz demolished the baseball in his first game with the torpedo bat on Monday - finishing 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and two home runs, including a 436-foot moonshot that came off the bat at faster than 110 MPH.
De La Cruz, who was already the biggest liability to win NL MVP at BetMGM, said after the game that he feels more in control this season and that it "feels really good" using the torpedo bat for the first time. In theory, the bigger barrel could unlock even more power from a player whose bat speed already ranks among the league's best.
All of that is bad news for 35-year-old Texas Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi, who gave up a home run to the Boston Red Sox in his debut and currently ranks in the bottom 10% in max exit velocity (110.8 MPH) and hard-hit rate (66.7%). If De La Cruz can take him deep tonight, a $10 bet would return a $47.50 profit.
