🏁 All-Star Race predictions, expert picks & best bets at North Wilkesboro

Editor's note: All the picks below were made on Friday, May 16

In 2023, the NASCAR Cup Series returned to North Wilkesboro for an All-Star race that Larson dominated. The track then got repaved that year, leading to an absolute snoozer last year: Joey Logano led all but one lap from the pole to win the race.

The NextGen car’s struggles to produce quality short-track racing, especially when those tracks don’t do much tire wear, are again at play this weekend. If you can correctly identify the driver who wins the pole, you’ll likely score a ton of closing line value (CLV).

The favorite Larson, won’t have a shot at the pole since he’ll be out of town, opening up value further down the board as he’ll face an uphill battle. I expect plenty of line movement throughout the weekend, but I predict Christopher Bell will win the 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro.

🏆 Pick to win All-Star Race: Christopher Bell (+650 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

To handicap the 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race, I leaned heavily on qualifying results from the three short tracks we’ve visited this season: Phoenix, Martinsville, and Bristol.

Given how difficult it is to pass here, I emphasize qualifying, which places a premium on starting from the pole position.

Bell generally excels in time-trial qualifying. His average starting position this year (13.8) ranks ninth. He finished last season ranked fourth (11.2). At the three short tracks we’ve visited, Bell started 11th (Phoenix), first (Martinsville), and seventh (Bristol).

He finished first, second, and eighth, respectively. Last year saw Bell qualify third for this race before plummeting to 17th.

He struggled despite posting the sixth-best average green-flag speed. His teammate, Denny Hamlin, ranked second in the metric and finished second. Bell and JGR have too much speed on these tracks to pass him up at +650. Of our best sports betting apps, BetMGM offers the longest odds.

💎 Best value bet to win All-Star Race: Josh Berry (+2200 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

The NASCAR All-Star Race is a weird event because it doesn’t confer a playoff spot to the winner, which changes teams’ incentives to allocate resources toward the race. The smaller field also condenses the odds board, which is why my value bet and “long shot bet” are clustered together.

At +2200 on FanDuel, Berry stands out as an excellent value. For one, he clocks in at +1600 or +1800 at every other major domestic book. For another, he started fourth at Phoenix, 14th at Martinsville, and 11th at Bristol, so he should have some speed in Saturday’s qualifying session.

If Berry pulls this off, you’ll score a nice $220 return from a $10 bet.

The No. 21 Ford has shown speed all season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this car on the iconic Victory Lane lift.

🎯 Best long shot to win All-Star Race: Kyle Busch (+2500 via ESPN BET) ⭐

Let me begin by stating that the true long shots–Daniel Suarez (+10000), Austin Dillon (+12500), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (+12500), and Harrison Burton (+35000) haven’t shown enough speed to warrant consideration. That leaves us with a handful of drivers in the +2500 to +3500 range to pick from, and those aren’t exactly long shots.

I recommend getting at least some exposure to Kyle Busch at +2500. The price is fair for the equipment and talent. While not having a great season, Busch qualified 15th at Phoenix, 12th at Martinsville, and 15th at Bristol. Again, those aren’t great numbers, but they’re good enough to throw a bit on Busch at this price.

Let’s just hope he doesn’t get into another fight in the infield after this year’s race.

💰 Best All-Star Race prop bets & picks at North Wilkesboro

Another trick of the All-Star Race is that it only pays to win. That reduces drivers’ reason to care about top X finishes as they won’t receive points for them. If racing for third or fifth means less to the drivers on the track, it should also mean less to us as bettors. As a result, I’m focusing on a matchup wager for our best NASCAR prop bet for the 2025 All-Star Race.

đŸ”„ Best prop bet for All-Star Race: Christopher Bell vs. Kyle Larson (-105 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bell will qualify his No. 20 Toyota ahead of the 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race; Larson will not qualify his No. 5 Chevrolet as he’ll be out of town qualifying for the Indianapolis 500. Since Larson must start in the back, Bell will, barring an accident, start ahead of him.

I suspect this line was set before Larson announced his plans to miss qualifying. DraftKings's lack of an adjustment is a miss, as North Wilkesboro is an incredibly difficult track for passing. While Larson managed to move from 12th to fourth here last year, starting 20th or worse is another beast.

This same wager will cost you -130 at BetMGM, which likely reflects Larson’s disadvantage. Lock this bet in before DraftKings adjusts their price, where are winning $10 wager will profit $9.52.

🚀 Best long-shot prop bet for All-Star Race: Josh Berry Top 3 (+650 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

With a short entry list, my standards for a long-shot bet have to be adjusted, leading us to this +650 play at FanDuel. Sure, drivers won’t care as much about running up front if they can’t win, but a guy like Berry still has plenty to prove, even after his first Cup Series win a few months ago.

I like Berry's speed in qualifying at the short tracks, his pedigree as a local short-track driver, and his winning of Xfinity Series races at Martinsville and Dover. Perhaps most importantly, I like that we’re getting this for +650 at FanDuel while it’s +450 at some of our other sites with the best sportsbook promos.

📈 All-Star Race trends & North Wilkesboro history

Here are a few All-Star Race trends to consider before betting on Sunday's race at North Wilkesboro. Since the All-Star Race has changed venues several times in the last decade, I’m focusing only on the last two events.

đŸŽïž  Start up front, stay up front. Last year’s event - the first on the repaved surface - saw Joey Logano lead all but one lap after starting on the pole. In the Open, Ty Gibbs led the whole race from the pole. Things were dicier in 2023, but polesitter Daniel Suarez still led a quarter of the laps before finishing seventh.

đŸŽïž It’s hard to pass, but Kyle Larson can do it. Larson is the only driver to have scored a top-5 result in both All-Star Races at North Wilkesboro, and he did so despite starting 16th in 2023 and 12th in 2024. He has an even tougher task ahead of him this year, but the trends suggest he can get it done.

💡 How to bet on the 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race

The NASCAR All-Star Race format seemingly changes every season. This year, we’ve got a 250-lap race with a competition break at lap 100 and a possible promoter’s caution at lap 220. While the latter rule change has the potential to introduce some chaos late in the going, it’s largely the same format as last year’s 200-lap race. Here are my NASCAR betting strategy notes for the All-Star Race:

  • Limit your exposure. These events don’t pay in points, so drivers, crew chiefs, and teams will plan accordingly. It doesn’t make a ton of sense for teams to invest heavily in running well here, so it doesn’t make a ton of sense for you to do so, either.
  • Qualifying will be incredibly important. It’s hard to pass on short tracks in this car, and last year’s snoozer of an All-Star Race reminded us how much a smooth surface that limits tire wear can affect racing. Trust the guys who start near the front.
