The eyes of the hockey world are on Raleigh, N.C., and Alex Ovechkin ahead of tonight's Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes tilt. The visitors will look to string together a pair of wins following a three-game losing skid, despite plenty of distractions.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have no such preoccupations and they are enjoying their best spell of the season to date, sporting the NHL's best record (11-2-0) over the past month. The puck drops from Lenovo Center at 7 p.m. ET (MNMT/TNT/truTV).

Our Hurricanes vs. Capitals prediction and player props analyze the chances of Ovechkin scoring in what we expect to be a low-scoring affair this evening. Plus, we offer three prop picks featuring Tom Wilson, Dylan Strome, and Seth Jarvis.

🔢 Capitals vs. Hurricanes odds & betting lines

Here are the latest Capitals vs. Hurricanes odds and betting lines from our best live betting sites.

🎯 Capitals vs. Hurricanes score prediction: Hurricanes 3, Capitals 2

The Capitals haven't played their best hockey in the last week, losing three straight for the second time this season. They didn't play particularly well in Boston either, prevailing 4-3. It doesn't feel like the Presidents' Trophy is a priority for Spencer Carbery's team, and why would it be?

It's not like you get anything for accomplishing the feat, and securing the Presidents' Trophy basically guarantees you won't win the Cup. At least it has in the last 12 years.

Plus, the collective is wholly devoted to helping Ovechkin break Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record before the season ends. It's easy to understand why, not only for the obvious reasons, but also to galvanize the Great 8 going into the playoffs. Until he breaks the record, it will be a distraction for a Caps team that has been the NHL's most consistent up to this point.

Facing a surging Hurricanes team at home, where they boast the fourth-best home record (29-8-1), on the second game of a back-to-back with anything but undivided focus is not a recipe for success.

Since Rod Brind'Amour decided to rotate Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov, the Hurricanes are 12-5. After going 0-2 across the first rotation, they are 12-3-0. It's Andersen's turn tonight, and he has won six in a row, going seven straight without conceding more than two goals.

And then there's Logan Thompson, who will get the nod after resting against Boston last night. Thompson endured his worst start of the season in his last game, allowing seven goals on 22 shots against the Buffalo Sabres. I expect a quintessential bounce-back performance from the Caps No. 1.

Will Alex Ovechkin score tonight? No ⭐⭐⭐

I backed Ovi to score against the Bruins, and he dually obliged. The Ovechkin goals record odds increasingly expect him to break the record this season, and so do I.

Ovechkin scores often against the Hurricanes, netting eight in the previous 10 games and 51 in 91 meetings. However, if the game script goes as I predict, the Caps will only score twice. I don't love the odds of Ovechkin scoring one of two, and I don't think he'll get a shot at an empty net, so I'm going with no.

🏒 Best Tom Wilson prop pick: Under 1.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐

Wilson hit the Over on this prop in the last two games but went Under the total in eight of the previous nine contests. He's also gone Under in six of the last eight away games. Plus, Wilson has just six shots in his previous five games against Carolina, including two in a pair of meetings this season. Of our best sports betting sites, bet365 offers the best price.

The Caps' leading scorer is a model of consistency, tallying 72 points in 74 games. He's been Washington's best in the last two games, posting four points. I like his mini-hot streak to continue against a Hurricanes team he's had success against, scoring at least a point in five of the previous six meetings.

In that span, he notched eight points.

📊 Best Dylan Strome prop bet odds

🏒 Best Seth Jarvis prop pick: Over 0.5 assists ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best odds: +142 via FanDuel ($10 to win $14.20)

Jarvis, who only has 29 assists in 66 games, has come alive since Mikko Rantanen was sent packing. He has six assists in the last eight games, including four in the previous three.

That's 21% of his total assists in a 12% game sample. While he hasn't been exceptional against the Caps, registering four points in the last six meetings - two of which were assists - I'm banking on his hot streak continuing.
