Capitals vs. Wild Odds, NHL Player Props & Score Predictions Tonight: March 27

The Minnesota Wild's offense has been tame over the last two months as they prepare to play the high-flying Washington Capitals at home on Thursday.

The Minnesota Wild without Kirill Kaprizov reminds me of a sabre-toothed tiger without teeth, so I guess they're a sabre-toothless tiger.

The tamed Wild will look to grind out a much-needed result when they welcome the Washington Capitals to Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn., for tonight's contest (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

I can't see Minnesota breaking loose in this one, either, so I'm backing the Under 5.5 goals in my Capitals vs. Wild prediction and player props.

📊 Capitals vs. Wild pick & odds: Who will win tonight's NHL matchup?

As of 6 a.m. ET, the Capitals are the -160 moneyline favorites to beat the Wild (+135) in tonight's NHL matchup from Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. I predict the Wild will beat the Capitals in a game with five goals or fewer.

🎯 Capitals vs. Wild score prediction: Wild 3, Capitals 2

At some point, every team will endure an off-game, no matter how seemingly unerring. The Capitals have been immune from that rule over the last month, with their only two losses in the previous 11 games coming on the road to two of the NHL's best home teams, the Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles Kings. It's why they're among the Stanley Cup odds favorites.

I can't qualify those results as stinkers, so they're overdue for a putrid performance, right?

While laying an egg doesn't seem possible for this Capitals team, I think they'll be slightly off against the Wild, who desperately require a result. Even if the Capitals prove me wrong and are back to their winning ways, I can't foresee an explosion of goals.

The Wild scored one goal in the last two games and have netted more than three in three of the previous 15 games. Two of those were thanks to a late empty-netter, and all three came against the porous defenses of Buffalo and Seattle.

Since Kaprizov's first game out of the lineup about two months ago, the Wild have scored the fewest goals per game (2.14) and the second-fewest on home ice (2.33). Out of a need for self-preservation, they've tightened things up defensively, conceding the sixth-fewest in their own barn (2.17) in that timeframe.

The Caps have the third-best defensive record, providing more ammunition for triggering the Under.

Best bet: Under 5.5 goals  (-114 via FanDuel)

Will Alex Ovechkin score tonight?

As we pay close attention to the Alex Ovechkin goals record odds, the pressing question is whether Great 8 will score tonight. I backed him to score in the last game against Winnipeg, and he dually obliged. I don't think tonight is the night for Ovechkin's 890th goal but stay tuned for more Ovechkin goal action.

🏒 Best Ryan Hartman prop pick: Over 2.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Best odds: +120 via FanDuel ($10 to win $12)

Hartman is doing his utmost to improve the Wild's languid attack, with a recent uptick in his shot production. He hit the Over on this prop in five of the last seven games. Hartman is also doing the business at home, firing at least three shots on target in five of the previous eight at Xcel Energy Center.

The 30-year-old veteran also eclipsed the 2.5-shot threshold in five of the last six meetings versus the Caps, with his two-shot performance in the last head-to-head the only exception. FanDuel is the outlier of our best sports betting sites, so lock the pick in there.

Like a dolphin leaping out of the water for the first time, Protas is enjoying a breakout season in his fourth year as a pro. He is second on the team with 64 points, scoring at a .90 points-per-game rate. The 24-year-old is on a five-point scoring streak while posting at least a point in eight of the last nine.

📊 Best Aliaksei Protas prop bet odds

🏒 Best Jakob Chychrun prop pick: Over 2.5 shots ⭐⭐⭐

Best odds: +120 via bet365 ($10 to win $12)

With at least three shots in six of eight games, Chychrun is letting loose from the point at a higher clip over the last three weeks. During that stretch, he's averaging 3.13 per contest. He's also productive in enemy rinks, hitting the Over in four of the previous six. His probability should be slightly higher considering Minnesota has conceded 29 shots at home per game since Jan. 27, the eighth most.
